Trick Training Animals – Lessons With Lukas, The World’s Smartest Horse – The Smile

If you’ve done any horse training, you’ve likely had some exposure to training basics, liberty work, and using rewards to elicit response. But these are just theory. Today I want to show you how to combine real life situations with these theories and teach an actual trick, the smile. I’ll also help you get past the sticking point for most animal trainers, so both you and your horse can have a fun training session free of frustration.

Lukas’ first trick, the smile, will be our starting point for trick-training – it’s fun, easy and can be polished as desired. All of Lukas’ lessons are started in his stall (he is always loose during training sessions, as you’ll recall from our Liberty article) – I incorporate numerous brief lessons during grooming and cleaning. This allows him the freedom to adjust himself and gives him breaks to absorb the lessons. However, if you’re more comfortable having the horse haltered, hold the lead rope in your non-cueing hand. I suggest that you stand at a slight angle to the horse’s left shoulder. This is a comfortable, familiar spot for both of you. Except for Lukas, I never stand directly in front of a horse; we want to keep our training fun and safe. For convenience sake, it also helps many horses if the stall wall borders their right side. This prevents unwanted shifting about initially, and can help improve the horse’s focus.

Consistency is essential and will be your most useful tool during these lessons. The horse will understand what you want much quicker if your body position, movements, voice, and click are the same every time. This becomes especially important if you plan on adding more tricks in the future.

Now, there are many ways not to teach this, and I don’t want to give you any wrong ideas to consider. The only equipment I use is myself, and for the round pen work, I carry a lead rope to accentuate my directives. I don’t condone using any type of aversive to get the horse to comply. And I can guarantee that Lukas will smile across an arena from my slightest request.

In general, it goes as follows: a light touch (using my left pointing finger) to the muzzle, preferably on the center of the horse’s upper lip. So, we’ve got our feather-light touch (as you’ll remember from our Pressure article) on the horse’s muzzle and…What’s next? We wait. And why are we waiting? Because this is when the learning takes place, when the horse is trying to figure out what we want. Waiting is as important as anything else we do. It’s typical to want things fast and easy, but to have a solid partnership and performance takes time and empathy. I assure you that if we’ve done our basics and prepared our horse properly, we won’t have to wait long. Usually within a minute or so, I’ll notice something I can click for – even a slight wiggle of the lip will do. Remember, if there’s no movement whatsoever, try a light tap or vibration rather than more pressure.

Next, I promised that you wouldn’t get stuck because of a common error. Let’s go back to the smile. You’re lightly touching the horse’s muzzle, your click (the word or whistle you’ve paired with food as described in the Basics article) marks the exact moment of maximum effort given the student’s current capabilities and understanding, simultaneously releasing your cue/the pressure. And the treat follows closely behind. Now, as soon as you begin to get a reliable response, you want to start expanding it. We do this, once again, by waiting, this time for a larger response before clicking and treating.

You can expect that, when the learner isn’t clicked for a usually rewarded behavior, there will be some frustration, irritability and surprise. This is similar to when we go to start our car and the battery is dead. Our anticipation of going somewhere is replaced with numerous reactions: we’ll turn the key in the ignition a few more times, shake our heads, maybe mutter some choice words under our breath. Then we go do what needs to be done – make our calls and get another battery. Horses are no different – they’ll repeat a behavior or offer unrelated responses, until finally coming up with an improvement of their own. During this time, we’re just calmly and casually waiting, trying to maintain the same cue pressure and positioning. Imagine this: for me and my horses, A & B cues lead to response C. It’s very confusing to the animal when C doesn’t happen right away, and then the trainer throws in different cues, and then multiple cues, and then louder cues. There’s no clear, distinct connection and the training gets muddled. It’s our responsibility to be an example for our students; our horses can’t be more reliable than we are.

Keep in mind a few words here about attitude: having a cheerful, appreciative and respectful outlook can do wonders for your training results. Regarding sessions as fun, explorative play that is mutually enjoyable promotes eagerness and curiosity. From a training perspective this also just makes good sense – the more behaviors that an animal is willing to try, without fear of punishment, gives you more opportunities to shape an assortment of actions.

So, we’re in our spot watching and waiting; I click and treat a few times and we take a break. Sessions are brief and the schedule is flexible depending on our time, goals and energy. Animals are a lot like little children in my opinion; they need time to absorb new information and the latitude to explore different options. I encourage this. We don’t get mad at little kids if they get confused, do we? I hope not. As we go along like this, we’ll be able to draw out more of a response with fewer treats, and soon we can dispense with the tactile cue altogether, if we want.

I fade and eliminate all tactile cues eventually. However, depending on your style, you can leave the lessons as touching tricks and still have a lot of fun with them.

Best Ways To Use Mane And Tail Shampoo Horse Shampoo Yourself

Mane And Tail Shampoo came from humble rural beginnings, as a beauty product for show horses, to become an essential grooming item in the bathroom cabinets of women in the know across the globe. There are also other manufacturers besides Mane And Tail that have marketed their horse shampoo products for use on humans too.

There are several key selling points for horse shampoos:

- you make a significant cost saving by using them
- they leave hair feeling soft, shiny and luxuriant
- the skin below the hair is also kept healthy and moist
- they don’t contain any skin irritants

It is a good idea to learn the best practices for using a horse shampoo, to ensure you stand the best change of getting the results you’re after. My purpose in writing this is to identify what to look out for when trying this shampoo out, to give you peace of mind in what you’re doing.

Select A Brand You Know

Whether or not you’re using Mane And Tail Shampoo, purchase from a human cosmetic store rather than a pet or animal store. This is so you can be confident that what you’ve bought has gone through testing on human hair. You really ought to be safe with any horse shampoo, similar as they are to their human equivalents in terms of ingredients. The product you go for is your choice, ultimately.

Cautious To Begin With

Use only a small amount of the horse shampoo to begin with. You may find the shampoo harsher than what you are used to, so you are best to experiment a little at a time. If you are happy with the results, try adding a little more until you reach your desired effect. The shampoo can be mixed with water also if you need it a little weaker.

Alternate With Human Shampoo

It is possible that you’ll get your desired effect from using Mane And Tail Shampoo only a couple of times each week. If you wash more regularly, there”s no problem in alternating with your regular human shampoo. It is all about finding out what works for you.

Use A Conditioner

For best results, conditioning straight after washing is essential. Those with dried out hair should take note. If possible, use a matching conditioner for best results – such as Mane And Tail Conditioner if you are using that shampoo. As with the shampoo, experiment with a small amount to start with and work up to the correct amount for your hair.

If you use this information when you try out horse shampoo, you will give yourself the best chance of getting the hair you are looking for. I’ve found that people with oily or greasy hair won’t see any advantages from trying it. For people with wiry or dry hair, I strongly suggest you get yourself some today and follow this advice in applying it.

Buying Your First Horse

If you are a keen rider, then owning your own horse is sure to be your dream. However, there are a number of things that you need to take into consideration when buying a horse. Owning a horse not only requires lots of your time but can also be very expensive.

Before you go ahead and buy your first horse, you will need to consider the following:

Cost

Owning a horse is not cheap. It is vital that you are in a position to be able to make a financial commitment in order to provide your horse with good care and a proper home. Not only will you need to think about the cost of equipment such as tack, food, grooming equipment etc but also the cost of caring for the horse long-term. Horses require regular care and this includes check-ups from vets and treatment such as vaccinations and grooming.
In recent years, many horse owners have struggled financially, resulting in horses not being provided with proper treatment. It is important that you think carefully before you buy. Rather than opting for your dream horse, stick to something that suits your budget.

Time

Before you buy your first horse, you will need to think carefully about how much time you will be able to dedicate to looking after it. Horses need regular care, so it is vital that you are able to fit this into your daily routine. Working out a routine that suits your schedule will enable you to provide your horse with regular care.
If your daily routine happens to change because of your job or as a result of going on holiday, then you will need to place your horse in the care of someone trustworthy who has good knowledge of how to look after it properly.

Your experience

Before you buy a horse, you will need to think about your abilities. Not only will you need to be able to care for your horse properly but you will also need to think about your riding skills. If you have an interest in horses and riding but little experience, then it is vital that you are able to receive help from someone who is able to provide you with the proper training.

When owning a horse, you will need to be able to recognise any signs of diseases or illnesses such as laminitis. Some illnesses need to be treated quickly and properly, so it is vital that you are able to recognise any signs and symptoms in order to take appropriate action.

Owning a horse also requires plenty of patience. You will need to be able to handle your horse properly and be aware of what actions to take should any changes in your horses behaviour take place. Inexperience with handling a horse can sometimes result in serious accidents so it is important that you think about your capabilities before you buy a horse.

Type of horse

As buying a horse for the first time is exciting, you may be tempted to select the first horse you come across. It is important that you take the time to find a horse that is right for you. Think about what you will be using your horse for. You may perhaps wish to buy a competition horse or you may simply be looking for the perfect companion.

There are a number of factors your will need to consider when it comes to selecting your first horse. Think about what breed, colour, age, height and sex you are looking for. If you require a competition horse, then you will need to select a horse that has the right abilities. Be sure to check what previous training the horse has with your seller.

Taking the time to find out as much as you can about the horse you are interested in will enable you to make the right choice.

The Pros And Cons Of Using Rubber Mats For Stall Flooring

Many different types of materials are used as bedding for horses. There are distinct benefits and issues with all of them, and different horses need different surfaces. Using rubber mats for stall flooring does not free the owner from deciding what type of bedding to use, but rather provides a supplement to the bedding.

Living on hard surfaces can be bad for a horse’s feet. This is one of the major reasons that rubber mats are used. If installed over concrete, they provide a better surface for the horse to stand on. They can also be used for grooming areas and other places that horses stand, in order to provide an easy to clean surface that provides better traction.

Some people use these as a substitute for bedding, but the general consensus is that a horse whose stall has matting in it still needs bedding. Rather than being a substitute for bedding, a mat is a substitute for a concrete or hard clay floor. Proper bedding is a least a few inches deep, and appropriate for the horse whose enclosure it is.

In order to install this type of flooring, the material must be cut properly. If multiple pieces overlap, they can provide a tripping hazard to the horse. And if they do not reach the walls, they can provide both a tripping hazard and a place for the horse to potentially get his or her hooves stuck. This means that precise measurements and preferably interlocking pieces must be used.

The major concern with using these devices, aside from the care which is required in order to position them correctly, is that they will trap or attract mold, fungi or bugs. Though they are considerably easier to clean than dirt, this must not be neglected. Regular washing and possibly sterilization will help keep them from allowing a bug infestation, or mold growth to develop.

A great thing about using rubber mats for stall flooring is that the horse is much less likely to slip, should they dig through the bedding. Concrete is a difficult surface for horses to keep their balance on, and can cause accidents and falls if the horse digs through the bedding and winds up standing directly on it. Rubber provides much better traction, for both shod and unshod horses.

Single-sheet pieces that fill the entire stall provide an easier to clean surface than dirt, and are sometimes used for this purpose. While urine and feces can soak into the dirt and create a problem with cleanliness, rubber is non-porous and keeps all of the messy bedding away from the ground. A single smaller mat can also be used near the door in dirt stalls, to discourage horses that like to dig there.

Consider using rubber mats for stall flooring if you have very hard floors in your barn, or if you are concerned with the cleanliness of your dirt floors. While you must be careful to use them correctly and not neglect necessary maintenance like cleaning and sterilizing them, they are usually a great investment in keeping your horse happy and healthy.

Finding The Power Of Your Own Energy

Miraval Resort in Tucson, Arizona is known for its luxury spa treatments, exciting rope challenges, and experiences with the horses at the nearby Purple Sage Ranch.

What’s great about most of the challenges and the Equine Experience is that they are all included with your ample overall cost for the stay. Although the spa treatments were amazing, including a thermal mud wrap. What stands out most in my memory of the time at Miraval are the “Swing and a Prayer” rope challenge and the Equine Experience.

And, believe me, the mud wrap was memorable – black French mud mixed with spirulina. Coated over my legs, arms, and torso, followed by being wrapped up in a cocoon and having my head massaged. This was followed by my taking a shower in the treatment room and trying to become white again. Then, an amazing massage to end the pampering.

Back to the horse story! After we had all done the first part of the experience, grooming our horse’s hooves, brushing, and walking, we moved over to another ring where we would be lunging a horse.

As I watched our instructor demonstrate what we would be doing ourselves, I was convinced that there was no way I could get the horse to do this. She pointed the center of her body (belly button) at the horse’s rear end and he amazingly started to walk. She went a little faster and he moved faster. She turned and pointed toward his side instead of his behind, and he stopped. Amazing!

And then, she walked around in such a way that he totally reversed directions and moved quite rapidly. And then she turned again and he stopped. Wow! I was totally impressed.

Amazing power in that energy being pointed in various directions. I watched as another woman did the same movements without quite such accuracy in the horse movements that resulted from her actions.

And then it was my turn. I concentrated on the energy in my body and confidently aimed my energy toward Bailey’s behind. And, what do you know? He moved. I moved more quickly and so did he! I aimed at his side and he stopped. AND, after a reminder of just exactly how to do the turn operation, that worked also. Bailey did a total turnaround. I was feeling so energized running around the ring!

What a powerful metaphor for how we can use our energy. When we connect with our internal power and direct it well, we can move mountains. This is the kind of power we need to move our businesses or projects forward!

It’s really an inside job. Concentration is essential. And the knowing that we do have the power actually GIVES us the power. Thank you, Bailey, for the amazing experience at Miraval.

Tennessee Walking Horse Mane And Tail Care

Tennessee Walking Horses of all riding styles look far more beautiful when they have a long, flowing mane and tail keeping time with their steps. This really accentuates the beauty of these magnificent horses. Your Tennessee Walking Horse can be gorgeous in no time at all if you follow these simple steps.

First, you need to untangle your walking horse’s mane and tail. Do not ever use a comb of any kind on your horse. A comb will prevent you from gaining a long, luxurious mane and tail more than any other grooming equipment you use on your horse. Use a stiff bristle human hair brush to detangle the mane and tail.

Start at the bottom of the mane or tail and work your way up to the top where the roots are. Detangle small sections at a time. I like to spray the hair heavily with a spray shine product such as show sheen or laser sheen to help me get it untangled. If it’s really badly tangled, I use Cowboy Magic for serious detangling. I still use the same method on all my Tennessee Walking Horses, de-tangling from the bottom, working my way up to the top as I make progress.

Once you have the entire mane and tail detangled, you need to wash it. Any regular shampoo will do fine. I like to follow up with a good conditioner. If you are using the homemade rapid growth formula that I use on all my Tennessee Walking Horses, this is when I apply it to the roots and rub it in real good with my fingers. (To get the recipe to make the rapid growth formula, see below.)

The next step I do with my walking horse’s tail is to braid it from the bottom of the tail to the bottom of the tail bone. Be sure to leave it loose around the bottom of the tail bone so it doesn’t irritate your horse. I seal the very bottom of the braid with black plastic electrician’s tape. Never use a rubber band, as this will break the hair.

As the tail grows longer, I fold the tail, doubling it up below the bone. Then I apply another piece of electrician’s tape to secure the fold below the bone. This is all you need to do to give most Tennessee Walking horses the best chance to grow their tail naturally.

Tack It Right! Don’t Horse Around While Tacking For English Style Riding

To tack up a horse means getting it ready for the ride by putting on the saddle pad, saddle and bridle. Equipping the horse with the right tack and ensuring the comfort of the horse by tacking correctly is imperative to ensure your safety and comfort in the English riding style.

English horse riding is different than Western riding style. Although the tack (horse riding and maintenance equipment) used might appear similar to a novice, an experienced equestrian knows better. Both styles use tacks such as saddle, saddle pads, stirrups, bridles, reins and more, but on a closer look you could find a major difference in the tacks “” from size to functionality. However, the correct tacking of your horse is crucial in both English and Western styles.

To tack up a horse prior to riding it casually or for competitions means to get the horse ready for the ride by dressing it with the tack equipment. English riding tack typically consists of saddle blanket, a saddle, bridle, girth, bit, reins, martingale and so on. The saddle for English riding is smaller and lighter than the Western one, however, each saddle types has further designs specific for particular sports and activities. Also, in English riding, you are in direct contact with the horse’s mouth using the reins. The reins are also held by both hands (one rein in each hand) and used as an aid, just like the seat and the legs are used to control the speed and direction of the horse.

Since, there are more factors and coordination required while riding English style, equipping the horse with the right tack and ensuring the comfort of the horse by tacking correctly is imperative to your ride. Experts often prescribe a step-wise procedure while tacking for English riding. Here’s a list:

* First, tie the horse before you start.
* The next step is to groom the horse, either where the tack will be placed or you can also do a full grooming and ensure the horse is clean and fit. Remember to pick the hoofs as well.
* After you’ve groomed the horse, put the saddle pad first, the horse’s withers is the correct spot.
* Then place the saddle on the addle pad (right in the middle). Here, it is important to ensure that the girth is strapped not too loosely or tightly. If it is too tight, you will make the horse uncomfortable. A correct way of putting the saddle is from the left side.
* Now you can put on the boots or polo wraps , if necessary.
* You can now undo the cross ties and put the reins over the horse’s neck.
* Take the bit and put it in the horse’s mouth, be gentle and careful with your fingers while doing this, avoid hitting the teeth and warm the bit in cold weathers. If the horse is shy to the bit, you can apply honey or peppermint oil etc. to it.
* Then slide the bridle’s crown gently over the horse’s ear.
* Do the throat latch and the chinstrap, buckle it loose enough to fit four fingers between the horse’s throat and the latch, the chinstrap should be buckled with a finger or two’s space in between.

It is recommended that you do not tack a horse alone if you are doing it for the first time. Watch an experienced equestrian do it, and assist him/her from time to time so that you can get used to treating the horse in the right way. For best approach and results, you can take lessons from a qualified instructor, this way you can learn everything from tacking to riding to grooming and maintaining the horse and stable. Also, ensure that you use the right tack and wear appropriate equestrian apparel for English style riding, and treat the horse with love and care.
